Dear Friends
arriving at the Pergamon Museum in Berlin, last Sunday, we remarked the long queue of people waiting for entering. At least one hour or more would be necessary for to gain the entrance, a time not at our disposal. In looking around we seen the Neues Museum:
http://www.smb.museum/en/museums-and-institutions/neues-museum/home.html . Contrary to the suggestion in its name, the Neues Museum is not dedicated to modern or contemporary art, but rather to rich collections of artefacts of ancient civilization, especially to that of the ancient Egypt - see the images. The quality of the Egyptian collection of the Neues Museum is impressive and in particular that of the statuary. In looking to the different examples proposed by the Museum, an old enigma made surface in my mind: why the Egyptian artists, so skilled masters of any aspect of the surface and relief adhered strictly to the side view representation for people and objects on papyrus and bas-reliefs ? This enigma, notwithstanding my readings, for the moment, remains for me unsolved. Any suggestion from your side is welcome.
Salutations
Giancarlo
