in the Arab-Norman period, due to the interactions between the Arab, Byzantine and the Norman cultures (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norman-Arab-Byzantine_culture ) the mosaic art finds itself evolved from a horizontal, flat Roman dimension to a new, vertical, enveloping dimension conveying religious suggestions. Ultimate expression of this is the Palatine Chapel ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cappella_Palatina ) in the Royal Palace ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palazzo_dei_Normanni ) in Palermo ( http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palermo ). Here, in particular, the gold around the images of Christ, the angels and the saints indicates God which light illuminates the Paradise in the skies.
