Abstract expressionism is an artistic movement which originated in the post WW2 period primarily in the US but then in many other parts of the world. Yesterday I had the opportunity to visit one such artist in his studio in Malta. Many consider Alfred Chircop (b. 1933) to be the greatest living artist in Malta and his works of art are excellent proof of this with their unique and very personal style.
As commented by the MOMA, such paintings convey strong emotional or expressive content. At the ripe age of 81 it is great to see that Alfred Chircop remains so active in the artistic scene with large canvases which require strong physical and emotional effort to complete.
