Dear Friends
not far from Shanghai, far from the sea but on the bord of a lake, Tongli https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tongli surprises for its Venetian atmosphere. Each channel (Venetian.: rio), place (Ven.: campo), small place (Ven.: campiello), street (Ven.: calle), boat drived by a single oar like Gondole https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gondola , the shouts of the peoples, all remind Venice and by consequence our Marco Polo https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marco_Polo . The Chineses know him and he is popular in China. They know that foreigners were officers, sometime also in relevant positions, in the Chinese imperial administration but the presence of Marco Polo is not explicitly attested. This because of his possible marginal role in the administration or because of the destruction of ancient Chronicles in periods of instability. In any case, the argument that he don't visit China because in his book Il Milione https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Travels_of_Marco_Polo he don't mention for example the great Wall and he simply collected information from reports of other travellers, seems to me a bit weak. In fact, if he collected information from said reports, why he don't collected also so an important information like the Great Wall ?
Any comment from Your side is welcomed.
Salutations
Giancarlo
