Dear friends,
The island of Lastovo is far away from mainland Croatia so fortunately not much affected by development and tourism. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lastovo It enjoys crystal clear seas all around it, great for snorkeling and scuba diving or just swimming in general.
I had the opportunity to visit the island during the day (a welcome break from the required data analysis). The typical villages are very nicely set within the hilly surroundings. Of interest are the typical chimneys (fumari) as well as the fishing boats - which create great problems of light pollution in an island which has some of the best dark skies in all of Europe. The fishing boats are equipped with a multitude of floodlights (I calculated up to around 15kW of floodlights) which are used to attract fish. Hopefully this method of fishing does not spread to other areas of the Mediterranean.
Best regards,
Alexei
