in my knowledge there is no sacred animal in Buddism (but maybe I am wrong - please let me know), therefore I was very surprised by the lot of fallow_deers populating the Todaiji. Beautiful and peaceful they naturally conduct the visitor to the presence of Daibutsu which unabashedly, entoured by his grim guardians, graciously dispense his kindness and mercy (see the images).
