Roman Temple on the San Pietro Hill (Verona)

Dear friends
the hill of San Pietro on the left bord of the river Adige, has played always a key role in the life of Verona. It was inhabited at least from the Palaeolithic and in the Roman time it was a citadel hosting a temple. In the following times many other constructions has adorned the hill: the Castle of Theodoric king of the Ostrogoths, the Castle of Berengario king of Italy, a Visconti's Castle today disappeared with a big water tank, a Cistercens monastery today Archaeology museum of the town, the San Pietro church today disappeared and the Castel San Pietro a former austrian military academy. However, I was a bit surprised in reading on the electronic version of the city newspaper L'Arena (www.larena.it) that archaeologists, during the works of restauration and adaptation of Castel San Pietro as new
museum of the town, discovered a Roman temple, because it presence was already known and mentioned also by the Austria reports of the construction of castel San Pietro. However, during my last visit in Verona I decided to visit the hil of San Pietro. With a little effort I reached a position giving visibility on the Visconti's water tank and the small excavation of the base of the temple. But, my surprise was great in leaving the hill in seen a stone with a portion of spiral colums surely belonging to the temple. The images give you an impression of the san Pietro hill, the excavation of the water tank and the Roman temple.
